A second chance at love…

Jared Holt never thought he deserved either—until he found both in the arms of Aly Moore. Aly has loved Jared for as long as she can remember, and she’s more than ready for the future they’re making together. But Jared can’t help remembering his own family. And he’ll never forgive himself for what happened to them. How can he allow himself the very happiness he once destroyed?

To live a life worthy of Aly, Jared knows he has to stop running and finally put his past to rest. But when he decides to face his demons head on, he encounters more than he bargained for: a dangerous mix of jealousy, lies, and dishonest intentions. When those intentions threaten Aly, Jared loses all control, giving into the rage that earned him his bad boy reputation years before. And he’ll fight to protect her no matter what it costs…even if he destroys himself in the process.

Excerpt from Come to Me Softly

I gasped when strong. arms wrapped around me from behind. Then I melted when he buried his face in my neck. Jared spun me around and pressed me up against the cool metal of my car door. His hands were on my face, in my hair, slipping down my sides before he brought them back up to force me to look at him. “Thank you.” Desperation poured from him, his hold increasing as he stared down at the shock I felt lining my face. “Thank you for fucking believing in me, Aly. For getting me.”

Fear lashed across his face. Or maybe it was remorse. He swallowed hard, his voice hardened with strain. “I’m scared to think of where I’d be right now without you.”

That fear that had flashed on his face coiled in my stomach. Because I didn’t know where he’d been. Had no idea where the last three months had taken him. How far. How low.

I wasn’t sure I wanted to know.

You’re here with me now.” I had to believe that was all that mattered.

He grimaced. Gripping my face, he leaned down and kissed me, hard and demanding. There was no soft affection, none of the playfulness from upstairs. This was a seal. A branding. He jerked back. A storm raged in the blue of his eyes. “Don’t think I can’t see all those questions burning in your mind, Aly. And I may not have all the answers right now, but we are going to figure this out. Do you understand me? I promise you that.”

And I saw it all there, the torment that plagued Jared, this beautiful man who had lost his way, the one desperate to find his way home.

When I took the vows for better or worse, I meant them. Then I started to wonder if there was a limit as to how much worse I was supposed to endure. This is a different kind of love story. Read Nina’s journals for a tale of hope, strength of spirit, and unconditional love.

Excerpt

Shane loved walking around without a shirt on, showing off his muscular physique.  Honestly, I loved seeing him, loved touching his bare skin.  In that moment, he leaned his back against the counter and faced me.  Without thinking, I walked into his open arms, inhaled his scent to imprint it upon my soul, and kissed the broken heart tribal tattoo on his chest.
Shane: Are you trying to heal my broken heart?
Shaking my head, I responded.
me: Nope.  Just loving you.
Shane: Good.  It can’t be fixed.
He looked down and instead of wrapping me up and pulling me closer, he stiffened and stood straight.
Shane: Sometimes, I think you are only attracted to me because you want to fix me.
His demeanor had me tensing up.  Somehow, I knew what I said next was going to be really important.  Shaking my head, I found the words I sought.
me: Baby, until I got to know you, I didn’t even know you were broken.
That softened him.  My words worked.  They were magic.  He admired my ability to communicate, to speak eloquently, to make an impact through simple speech.  Words did not come easily for him.
He held me close.  Bending his head, his chin in my hair, he finally spoke what was clearly bothering him.
Shane: You make me want to be a better man, but I don’t want to change.  What are we going to do about that?
With my chin on his chest, staring up into his pained eyes, I told him the truth.  There was only one way I knew to make this work.
me: I’m going to love you through it.  No matter what, come what may, I promise I’ll love you the best I can with all that I am.
I meant it, too.

Must be he liked my response because within seconds, his lips closed the distance to mine.  That kiss.  That love.

EXCERPT

Yes, I was supposed to be out of town all weekend. I wasn’t due back until tomorrow evening.”  I sit back on the couch, leaning against the arm rest, facing him so I can watch him when he talks. “Okay, so why are you back? You haven’t answered my other question yet either. Why were you at my house?”  He raises my legs and scoots back on the couch, laying my legs across his lap and starts rubbing, back and forth, up to my knees and back down to my ankles. “Do you want the honest truth or what I think you want to hear?”  Duh! “Honesty, Caleb, always honesty.” I tilt my head sideways, trying to figure out what he is about to tell me.  He turns his head and looks me square in the eyes. “I came back because I saw there was a bad storm getting ready to hit.” Rubs up, then down. “I came back because I know you are terrified of storms.” Rubs up, then down “I came back because I missed you. I came back because during the last two years, I have always been with you during a storm. I went to your house to stay with you, but when I drove up and saw that tree had fallen through your living room, it scared the hell out of me and I had to make sure you were alright.”  There’s something else in his eyes. Something he’s not telling me, but I’m not going to push him on the issue. I haven’t seen that look on his face before and I don’t know what to think about it.  “Thank you, Caleb. Thank you for always being there for me, for always knowing what I need and when I need it. I don’t know what I would do without you in my life.” And I don’t.  In the last two years, he’s done more for me than any other man. I pull my legs away from him and get up on my knees and scoot over next to him and wrap my arms around his neck. He brings his arms around me, pulling me in closer, causing me to fall forward landing on his lap. I have my face buried in the crook of his neck and his in mine. We just sit there, holding each other while the storm goes on around us. Something has changed in Caleb, but having him hold me like this feels good. It feels right. As soon as I think that I have a feeling of guilt wash over me. Gerrit.

Consequences Series by Aleatha Romig Review

Consequences-Series

Okay, Deep Breath!!!  Now, where to start?!  I’m not sure how I stumbled upon this book.  I remember seeing the name on Facebook here and there but with all the books I have on my TBR list, it didn’t catch my immediate attention.  Not sure why I ended up buying it and reading it but I AM SO GLAD I DID!!!!!  I don’t say this lightly but this is the BEST series I have read in a long time!  Easily, in my “All Time Favorites” category!  I’ve had to take a few days to digest the story and I’m still reeling from it!  Since I couldn’t put the series down long enough to write reviews in-between, I’ve decided to write a review on the entire series instead.

As I began reading the first book, Consequences, I figured it would be a typical “millionaire bachelor with a f**ked up view of the world who falls in love with an unsuspecting submissive woman” type of book.  I read the synopsis so I figured there would be a little CJ Roberts-esque darkness in it as well.  Oh, how I was wrong!  I was floored at all the twists and turns this story took!  It was literally like a train wreck I couldn’t look away from.  The further I got into the story, the more it unfolded and the further from a romance it got.  My hatred for the main male character, Anthony Rawlings grew and grew.  Yet, I was still rooting for him… Not sure how that happened so kudos, Aleatha for being able to write a character so well that you have to hate him but want to love him at the same time.  Seriously, there was not one redeeming quality about this man and when it looked like there was a chance for him being somewhat of a decent guy, he did something to bring me right back to disliking him.  The main female character, Claire, was also so complex.  I wanted to see her as weak (which many may see her as) but instead I saw her unyielding strength and ability to survive that far surpassed any weakness she may have had.

I was maybe a third of the way into the book when I decided this was not a romance at all and would classify it as a suspense/thriller/mystery but as a hopeless romantic, I was secretly hoping for it to turn directions so I kept on reading.  What I got was an intricately webbed story full of deception, revenge, excitement, endurance, and… love?  Still wasn’t too sure about that one.  The story was beautifully written and was so unpredictable I couldn’t put it down!  I have never had as many “what the f**k” moments as I had in this series!  As soon as I thought I had figured something out, I was thrown off guard again and headed in a different direction.  This continued throughout all three books!  I do need to say that the romance I was looking for did come and continued through all three books but it wasn’t quite what I expected either.  I realized the only thing better than one book boyfriend is multiple book boyfriends!  I had my favorite but I can honestly say I was torn for awhile.  Even toward the very end when I thought everything was getting wrapped up, Aleatha threw another twist into the story making my head swim and my heart hurt!  I absolutely love a book that makes you question what is right or wrong, pushes boundaries, and makes you ask yourself, what would you do if you were in that situation?  This entire series did that for me!  I highly recommend putting this series at the top of your TBR list now!  In fact, just go buy them and begin immediately!  (Links are below)  If you like books that keep you on your toes and tells a great story, I can’t imagine how you won’t LOVE the Consequences Series by Aleatha Romig!  It is by far a 5 out of 5 champagne glass series!   Well done, Aleatha!

And I refuse to give in.

A relationship with a man is the last thing I’m looking for right now, but one night with Parker changes everything. He is persistent, and he knows what he wants. Me.

He doesn’t treat me like I’m fragile.

But he doesn’t know, and I’m not ready to tell him.

What if it changes everything?

Tragedy found me when I was seventeen.

Teaser

I’m grateful when I reach the door to the ladies room that there isn’t anyone around. I reach for the handle when I hear from behind me, “Not going to use the men’s room again?” I know that sexy voice. It’s the same one as earlier this evening in this same area.

With my heart picking up pace, I turn around smiling sweetly, “No, I’m going to sit down and pee this time.” My smile spreads a little wider and I say a silent thanks to sweet baby Jesus for letting me find my voice this time.

He doesn’t respond. He just steps closer to me with the corner of his lips spreading upward.

I don’t breathe.

I can’t breathe. Not when he is this close.

God he smells amazing. Like a mixture of spice and mint. Maybe a hint of beer too. It’s the type of scent that would awaken a primal desire within any female, and good God do I feel awakened.

“You ran off before I could thank you for the dance earlier.” No, thank you. His voice is a faint whisper and his face is now so close that our noses are almost touching. I glance down at his very attractive red lips just as the corners of his mouth move up into the most beautiful smile. Shit. He knows I’m looking at his lips.

I’m transfixed by him. In this very moment, I would do whatever he said or answer to any name he called; even if it was one of those fluffy names like baby or princess. All I can think about is the desire flowing through my body for those lips to be on mine. I would take him in this hallway. There I said it. Or, did I think it?

Do something.

Anything!

I look back at his lips.

I lick my own.

I can’t think about anything but wanting to feel his lips against mine. All thoughts go out the window of me not being able to pick up a man at a bar. I don’t care, but I will say any cheesy pick up line if it means I get to go home with him.

I know he’s watching me. He has to be thinking about my lips too because just then his tongue comes out licking his own. I try to think of something else to do, but nothing comes to mind. I feel him close the distance between us. He puts a finger under my chin for the second time tonight lifting my face so I’m looking right into his eyes. Without taking his eyes off mine he speaks in a quiet, low, raspy whisper, “I’m going to kiss you now.”

Without waiting for my permission, his lips crash down against mine. He takes my top lip into his mouth tugging ever so gently. I let out a soft moan as his tongue lightly traces my lips- tasting me. I can smell the fresh mint and beer off his breath and all I can think about is tasting it. I grab his neck brining him closer -opening my mouth- inviting him in. He groans as I wrap my arms around his neck running my hands through his hair.

Shit, if I die tomorrow, I can die a happy woman knowing this was my last kiss.

His tongue enters my mouth and I meet it with my own. He reaches down to lift me up and I let him. I wrap my legs around his waist just as he slams my back against the wall in the corner of the hallway. There’s a rush of pain that shoots down my legs causing me to cry out. He must take that as a cry of whats left of me jacketpleasure because he kisses me harder.

I feel my dress rise all the way to my waist exposing myself for anyone that walks by. My head falls back against the wall and he immediately starts kissing down my chin to my neck, then up to my earlobe bringing it into his mouth biting down. “Do you want to get out of here?” He whispers so softly into my ear I almost don’t think I hear him correctly. When he asks me again I just nod in agreement. Afraid if I were to say anything it wouldn’t be yes, and I really want it to be yes.

Setting me down, he runs his hands over my dress laying it back into place, then grabs my hand and starts speed walking away heading towards the red exit sign.

There is no time, no place, no safety in a war of fixation. A war in which the winner will be either the last one standing, or the last one to die.

Divas “Given To You” Review

What a great ending to a great series!  We really wanted  to take an opportunity and highlight how unique this book/series is in our eyes.  Most books we read have the typical boy meets girl, boy messes up, girl leaves, boy creates grand gesture to win girl back, boy and girl lives happily ever after.  Don’t get us wrong, we LOVE all these books but it’s also refreshing to read something a little different.  We found “that different” in The Killer Next Door series!

In Carlie’s series, the one constant you will see is the love and devotion Kate and Neil have for each other while the turmoil comes from Roger’s unpredictable and calculating obsession for Kate.  Neil and Roger become formidable opponents throughout the book and Kate remains a strong, willful, and determined player to Roger’s deadly game!  We found the determination and strength in all three main characters truly refreshing and recommend the entire series to anybody who enjoys a good cat and mouse game and a great love story!

The Divas give Given To You by Carlie Sexton 5 out of 5 champagne glasses!

Given To You Chapter One in its entirety

“Roger…” Kate exhaled. Her heart jumped into her throat as she saw him standing before her.  He grabbed onto her arm roughly with one hand and pointed a syringe at her neck with the other.

“If you scream or make a scene, I’ll knock you out,” he said, showing Kate the syringe. “I don’t want to have to do that. All you have to do is cooperate and everything will be fine.”

Kate didn’t say anything at first. She felt like her brain was malfunctioning and she couldn’t form the syllables necessary to make words. Her entire body was in shutdown mode. Her brain was telling her body to run as fast as she could, but her muscles weren’t cooperating. This whole time she had been lulled into feeling safe, because she had security guards with her at every moment of the day. The reality was that Roger was more cunning than Neil or the guards had anticipated. He was an obsessed killer and his mind worked in ways the average person couldn’t fathom. And he has me.

She felt her breathing hitch. She was overwhelmed by fear as Roger held her tight and the needle, that dripped with something she didn’t want in her body, drew closer.

Kate glanced around the parking lot, but there was no one around to help her. Roger had found her and there was nothing she could do about it. “I’ll do whatever you want. Please don’t hurt me,” Kate said, her voice trembling. “What have you done with Porter?”

“Let’s just say that he’s sleeping in his car,” Roger said with a smirk.

“He’s still alive? Please tell me he is okay,” Kate said. “I don’t want anyone else to be hurt. Please.”

“What do you mean anyone else to be hurt? What do you think I am Kate? A monster? Is that why you moved away from me? The police told you lies about me and you believed them? Son of a bitch.”

“No…no…I don’t think you’re a monster. I meant anyone else besides Porter. He’s…he’s become…my friend. I know you’re a good guy and you…you have always…been kind to me,” Kate choked out, thinking she was going to hurl right there on the spot. The flaming rage in Roger’s eyes terrified her.

Her worst fears were being realized in that moment, but she had to know if Porter was going to be all right.

“He’s alive for now, unless you don’t do what I say.”

The last thing Kate wanted was for Porter to be killed because of her. It was bad enough that Mark had been slaughtered because of Roger’s obsession with her. Her mind began racing as she tried to determine the best course of action. There wasn’t a section of her brain devoted to escaping the clutches of an obsessed serial killer. She took in several deep breaths, hoping that would somehow make her thoughts more lucid. She realized that her best chance of survival was to make Roger think she cared about him. He seemed to have lost touch with reality. Or maybe he was a good actor and this had been the real him the whole time.

“Okay, Roger, I’ll do what you ask,” she said, trying to steady her voice. “Please don’t drug me.”

Kate’s heart was pounding in her chest, and she hoped Roger couldn’t hear it. Terror gripped her body and she felt it choking her. How am I going to survive? Will I ever see Neil again? The one thing she knew was that she had to appear normal. Being strong in this situation was vital to her survival. Roger seemed to calm down now that she was acquiescing to him and her fear wasn’t so evident.

“That’s a good girl,” Roger replied, leading her to his car.

As they approached his car, it became clear that she could end up being his victim, following Rose, Mark, and God knows who else. She was grateful that he had taken her when she wasn’t with Neil. There was no doubt in her mind that he would kill Neil if given the chance and losing Neil was something she couldn’t comprehend. She couldn’t endure that kind of loss again would gladly give up her own life to spare hisbecause her love for him had become fierce. She felt like a lioness protecting her cub.

Roger opened the car door and motioned for her to sit in the passenger seat. Her first instinct was to put up the fight of her life, but he still had the syringe. She knew he was strong enough to overpower her without the drugs, and despite not knowing what they would do to her, she knew she didn’t want to find out. Being conscious was the only way to ensure that Roger wouldn’t kill Porter, and then find Neil and kill him too.

So, she complied without resisting. Roger took a zip tie from his pocket and put it around the door handle and tightly bound her right wrist to the door. She felt the hard plastic tie cut into her skin, causing pain to radiate up her arm. There was no possibility of escaping now.

Roger had thought of everything, anticipating what she might do before she could even think of it herself. He knew what he was doing. She couldn’t jump out of the car to escape him.

Kate glanced into the backseat and saw little Jacob sleeping. At least she hoped he was sleeping. Was Roger so far gone that he would kill his own son? Who knew what he was capable of doing? He had killed his own baby when he murdered Rose. She listened carefully and watched Jacob’s chest while Roger went around the car and got in on the driver’s side. She breathed a sigh of relief when she saw Jacob’s small chest rising and falling with each breath. At least Roger hadn’t done another unthinkable act. How was he going to explain to his child who she was and what she was doing with them? Jacob was sure to ask questions. And where was Paulina right now? Kate put her free hand to her mouth in horror, at the realization that Paulina was most likely dead. She felt chills race all the way up her body at the thought that he had killed Paulina too. Oh God, she thought she was going to be sick. There was no way Paulina would let Roger take her child willingly.

Kate had placed her purse between her legs and the seat, trying to obscure it from view. She tried to stop the shaking that was threatening to overtake her. How am I expected to behave? Having her cell phone was a necessity if she was going to get out of this alive. She needed Roger to concentrate on her. The only problem was that her phone was on and if someone called, he would hear it. She could imagine him throwing it out the window as they sped along the highway, tossing out her only lifeline to the outside world.

Roger looked over at her as if he had read her mind, and said, “I need your cell phone. I’m sure that your boyfriend knows how to track us with it, so hand it over. I don’t want any unexpected guests showing up at the cabin and ruining our good time.”

Kate’s heart sank into the depths of her stomach. She reached down and took it out of her purse and gave it to Roger. He got out of the car, placing it on the ground behind the front tire. Then he started the car and backed up over it, smashing it and with it, the last vestige of Kate’s hope. Oh Neil…I’m so sorry.

She wanted to keep things light and upbeat, not knowing what Roger intended to do to her now that he had abducted her. She could only assume that he still wanted to be with her and she needed to keep him happy to survive. She looked over at him as he pulled out of the parking lot.

“Roger, why did you feel you had to threaten me with a syringe? You’ve tied me to the door. This doesn’t make sense. You’re my friend.”

“Kate, I’ve been very angry since you left me. I came to you and poured my heart out, telling you my feelings. And what did you do? You disappeared and cheated on me with Statton. This is the way it’s going to be for now. My way, not your way,” Roger practically shouted.

Her questions made him more agitated, so she decided to try another tactic. Reaching over and placing her hand on his thigh, she said in a soft voice, “You’re right. I was thoughtless and I hurt you. For that I am very sorry. Do you think you could find it in your heart to forgive me?”

Even though Roger was looking forward, she could see him visibly relax and some of the tension between them dissipated. He seemed to be mulling over what she had just said.

“In time, I’ll be able to forgive you Kate.”

Maybe talking about Jacob would lighten the mood a little more. “Is that adorable boy in the backseat, Jacob?” she asked.

“Yes, it is,” Roger said, concentrating on driving.

“He looks like a little angel sleeping there,” Kate said, knowing that Jacob was Roger’s pride and joy.

Jacob began to stir in the backseat. He started to sit up. “Dad, where are we?” he asked, rubbing the sleep from his eyes.

“We’re in the car, Jacob.”

“Where are we going?” he asked, looking out the window. Kate wanted the answer to this question too, but was too terrified to ask. Hopefully, Jacob would continue to ask the questions that were running through her head.

“We’re going to Big Bear, to the cabin.”

“Yay!” Jacob shouted. “Is Mom coming too? We always have so much fun at the cabin.”

“No, Jacob. Mom can’t come with us right now. She went on vacation.”

“Who’s she?” Jacob asked, pointing to Kate.

“This is my girlfriend, Kate,” Roger answered. He worried that Jacob might mention Rose as his girlfriend, so he quickly added, “Kate, I’d like you to meet my son, Jacob.”

“Nice to meet you, Jacob,” Kate murmured. She wanted to roll down the window and hurl after hearing Roger introduce her as his girlfriend. Not friend, but girlfriend. His expectations were now obvious. Roger’s obsession had totally obscured reality; he would expect her to do as he wished. Her thoughts turned to Neil’s handsome face. A face she was now certain she would never gaze upon again.

“Nice to meet you too, Miss Kate,” Jacob responded.

Kate smiled at the boy. “You are a very polite young man. It’s nice to meet you too,” she said, then turned back around.

“Thank you. My Mom always teaches me to be polite. Dad, when is Mom coming back from vacation and why didn’t she say goodbye to me?”

“She had to leave suddenly. Your grandma is sick, so your mom flew back to Germany to take care of her. She may not be coming back for a long time. She had to leave during the night when you were sleeping. That’s why she couldn’t say goodbye.”

“Oh,” Jacob said. “Is grandma going to be okay?”

“I think so. Your mom was just worried about her, so she decided to go see her. She wants Kate to take care of you. She told me to tell you that she loves you very much and for you to be a good boy.”

Roger’s explanation seemed to satisfy Jacob and he stopped asking questions. The pit in Kate’s stomach grew and her throat was burning from the rising bile. It was like someone had made her swallow hot coals. She knew Paulina hadn’t gone back to Germany without saying goodbye to her son. Roger had said Paulina was a good mother. She would have taken the time to explain to him that she had to go take care of her mother if that was the truth. Something had gone wrong and he had “taken care of” Paulina in his own special way.

He didn’t seem capable of breaking up with women like a normal person; he murdered them instead. If she hadn’t have been already shaking, she definitely would have started then. What does this mean for me? Neil?

Kate wasn’t sure if Neil would have considered her late at that point. She wondered how often he checked in with Porter? She just hoped that he would eventually check the GPS on her phone and realize that he couldn’t find her. It was just after three o’clock and she figured Neil expected her between five and seven p.m. At that moment, Neil didn’t know anything was wrong, and it might take hours before he had any idea, and even when he did figure it out, he wouldn’t know she was going to Big Bear. How would he find her? With each passing minute, Kate thought that Neil finding her seemed as unlikely as her climbing Mt. Everest in a bikini, without gear, in the middle of winter. Beads of sweat formed on her brow. She wiped them away with her hand and dried her hand on her jeans.

“Daddy, I have to go to the bathroom. Can we stop please?” Jacob asked.

“Yeah, I’ll find a gas station.”

After he had taken the next exit, he found two options and chose the one with fewer cars and less opportunity for Kate to find help.

“Kate, do you need to use the restroom as well?” he asked with a stern look on his face.

“Why don’t you take Jacob?” she suggested. “When you come back, I can go.”

“Okay, you just sit tight.”

Roger and Jacob got out of the car and headed toward the outdoor bathrooms. Once Roger was out of sight, Kate began looking around to see if anyone could help. She was locked in the car and the windows were up. She tried to open the door, but Roger had some sort of child-safety feature that made it impossible to open the locked door.

She saw an elderly couple, but they were too preoccupied with trying to operate the gas pump. They seemed a little of out sorts and she couldn’t get their attention. She motioned to the guy coming out of the convenience store, but he was glued to his cell phone and totally oblivious to his surroundings. How she wanted to get her hands on his phone.

Roger peered out at Kate from the bathrooms and saw that she was trying to get the attention of other people and attempting to open the door. He walked briskly toward her. When she saw him approaching, with gritted teeth and flaring nostrils, she knew that he was angry with her.

He unlocked the door and opened it, causing her to fall out onto the concrete onto her hip. It hurt terribly, but she didn’t say anything about it, her pain and fear paralyzed her, rendering her mute. Her shoulder felt as though it had been ripped out of its socket. Her eyes filled with tears as the searing pain shot down her leg, and up into her neck and shoulder.

Roger picked her up and cradled her in his arms, hiding her bound wrist from view. “Don’t even think about trying to leave me or get anyone’s attention,” he said menacingly. “I’ll find you, and once I have you secure, I’ll go to your boyfriend’s La Jolla penthouse and kill him. You’re mine, not his. Do I have to kill him to make that so?”

“N…No…no you don’t. I’m sorry. I was feeling claustrophobic and needed to get out of the car. Please take it out on me, no one else. I won’t try to leave, I promise.”

Roger looked at her intensely, the latent desire was clear in his eyes, which slowly drifted from her eyes to her mouth. He began kissing her face and found her mouth. He forced his tongue into her mouth and stroked her tongue with his while his hand slid up her thigh. She kissed him back, believing that was the only way to protect Neil and keep herself alive.

He tugged on her lower lip and then pulled away. “I don’t want to take anything out on you,” he said. “We’re finally together. I want to love you and have you love me in return. I’ve been dreaming about this for a long time. You’re mine now. All mine and no one else can have you. Do you understand?”

Kate’s eyes were wide with fear. She could feel Roger’s erection under her bottom, his rough hands on her body. She didn’t know how to respond, but fortunately Jacob walked up interrupting them.

“Miss Kate, did you fall down?”

“Yes, I did, honey. Your dad was just helping me up.”

“Jacob, I want you to stay in the car while I walk Kate to the ladies room. Can you do that for me, buddy?”

“Yes, Daddy,” Jacob said, opening the back door.

Roger removed a small knife from his pocket and cut the zip tie securing Kate to the car door. Kate rubbed her wrist as Roger led her to the restrooms squeezing her arm so tightly that she wanted to scream in pain, but didn’t. Between the throbbing in her hip and shoulder, she was surprised that she could walk at all. She knew for certain now, that he was capable of killing anyone who got in the way of what he wanted, so she kept her eyes downcast. Seeking help from bystanders would most likely just get them hurt or worse and she didn’t want any more dead bodies on her conscience.

“You didn’t answer me before,” Roger said, anger burning in his eyes. “Do you understand that you belong to me now? We are going to be together forever and no one and nothing is going to take you away from me.”

“Yes, Roger. I understand,” Kate said, her voice trembling as tears streamed down her face.

His eyes softened. “I don’t want to scare you. I know that we can be happy if you just give us a chance. Will you do that for me?”

Kate nodded.

“Good girl,” he said, kissing her on the cheek.

Kate walked into the restroom while her captor waited outside. She took a minute to assess herself. The pain in her hip was dissipating but she figured she would have a nasty bruise. That was the least of her worries. She took some toilet paper and wiped away the mascara that had smeared under her eyes.

Neil had done so much to make her day special; with breakfast, shopping for an exquisite gown, the pamper session at the salon…and now…now…this maniac. She gulped back a sob.

Suddenly, reality hit her hard and she shuddered at the thought of what Roger was going to expect from her. Things that she didn’t want to do with him. He had already kissed her forcefully and she thought she was going to throw up in his mouth. The thought of being with him made her skin crawl but she began preparing herself to do whatever it took to survive. She hoped that Neil or the police would find her. She had an idea of at least giving Neil a clue. Thank God her mom had read Hansel and Gretel to her when she was a child.

Kate took the lipstick out of her purse, hoping she had enough to write a message on the mirror. She wrote: Please help. Kate Simmons-kidnapped. Going to Big Bear. Call Neil at (619) 299-7140 and 911. This might be her only hope, that someone would find this message and call Neil to tell him where she was going. It would give him and the police a starting point. Someone was bound to see this sooner or later.

She had obviously taken too long and Roger burst into the ladies room like a deranged lunatic. Their eyes met in the mirror.

“What the fuck are you doing?” he growled at her.

Roger took the lipstick out of her hand and threw it across the bathroom. He then smeared her message with his hands, making it unreadable. Perhaps being so angry, he might decide to kill her right there. Kate had no idea how to diffuse the situation, words failing her as she stared at him with intense fear crashing over her like waves in the turbulent ocean.

In his fury, he grabbed her by the throat, pushed her against the wall and lifted her off the ground. She searched his eyes, hoping to see a glimpse of humanity, but only saw a dark abyss. Why hadn’t she noticed this before? This is what a killer looked like. His soul was dead, so he had no qualms about taking the life of another human being. He would give no thought to killing her.

“I thought we had an understanding,” he said, squeezing her throat tightly. “Look what you are making me do? Damn it, Kate. I have plans for us. Why can’t you understand that?”

He loosened his grip and Kate fell to the floor, gasping for air. She was on her hands and knees before him.

“I…I’m…I’m so sorry, Roger. I don’t know what got into me. You’re right,” she said. “We belong together. I see that now. Please take me to the cabin. I want us to be alone.”

Her only hope was that she sounded sincere and that he believed her. She didn’t want to die on the filthy bathroom floor.

Kate began to stand up and he grabbed a hold of her, pulling her body close to his. Roger’s hands glided down her back, finding her ass and she could feel his desire for her straining in his pants. He looked her in the eyes and said, “Prove to me that you want me.”

Kate parted her lips and stood up on her tip toes. She put her hands around Roger’s neck and guided his head toward her mouth uttering, “I want you, Roger.” Her lips reached his and she began kissing him passionately while he picked her up and wrapped her legs around his hips. He pushed her against the wall again, and began thrusting himself against her.

Kate broke away from the kiss and looked Roger in the eyes. “I really want you, but Jacob is waiting for us outside and any stranger could start a conversation with him and take him or hurt him,” she said. “We really should get back to him.”

Kissing her neck, he said, “I know, but I want to fuck you so badly right now. I want to feel your wet pussy wrapped around my cock, taking everything I want to give you. I want to fuck you over and over until you forget everything and everyone. God, you make me so hot and so damned mad at the same time.”

Kate’s heart was racing at Roger’s declaration, and in that moment, she assumed that he was going to rape her right there against the bathroom wall.

“But you are right,” he continued. “If anything happened to Jacob, I’d never forgive myself.”

Roger put Kate down, took her by the arm and led her to the car where Jacob was waiting in the backseat. Whispering in her ear he said, “If you pull another stunt like that again, I will turn around and go straight to the penthouse on Prospect Avenue. I’ll make you watch him die and it will be a very painful death. Is that what you want?”

Kate shook her head. Tears spilled down her cheeks and her lips quivered. She had to take the threat to Neil seriously and she had to gain Roger’s trust. So far, she was failing miserably and had only managed to piss him off, although he had seemed pleased when she kissed him in the bathroom. Her stomach gripped with anxiety and revulsion as she imagined all the things she would probably have to do, to appease this monster.  She wanted to spit in his face, scratch his dark, evil eyes from his head.

Roger put her into the car and zip tied her again before getting back in.

“Dad, can we get the ingredients to make s’mores?” Jacob asked.

“We’ll see how late it is when we get there,” Roger said. “I did bring some leftovers from Thanksgiving. We might wait and go to the grocery store tomorrow.”

“Okay.”

Roger thought for a moment. “Actually, we do need to stop. We’ll need to pick something up for breakfast.”

“Awesome!” Jacob cried out.

Kate envied Jacob’s innocence and complete unawareness that anything in the universe could be wrong.

“He’s such a good boy. You and Paulina have done a great job raising him,” Kate said, hoping to reconnect with Roger emotionally. She didn’t want him to be angry with her and she couldn’t think of anything else to talk about at that moment. She hoped that his love for Jacob, and her praise of his son, would lesson his anger toward her.

“Yes, he is a good boy. He’s never caused a moment’s trouble.”

“You and Paulina must be very proud of him.”

Roger looked at Jacob in his rearview mirror to see him immersed in his video game again. He then glanced at Kate. “I am very proud of my son. Paulina was too.”

Kate noticed that Roger spoke of Paulina in the past tense just like he had when he mentioned Rick. She wanted to cry for the woman who wouldn’t get to see her son grow up. Why would Roger take his child’s mother away from him? He either felt threatened by Paulina or the monster inside of him had grown so powerful that Roger was no longer in control. She grieved for the little boy in the backseat, who was now motherless and destined to be raised by a serial killer. She wanted to cry for herself as she realized that her fate most likely would be the same as Paulina’s, unless her brilliant boyfriend found her in time, or she figured out a way to escape. The chances of him finding her grew smaller with each passing minute.

“I didn’t know that you own a cabin in Big Bear,” Kate said, probing for information to determine if there was any possibility of Neil finding her. The property would be listed on the background report that Neil had done.

“I don’t,” he said. “My sister Joyce does. She gave me a set of keys years ago. She only likes to come up in the summer, so no one will be there right now. We’ll have the place all to ourselves for months.”

“Great,” Kate said with all of the enthusiasm she could muster. She would never be found. Escape was her only feasible option.

“Are you and Joyce close? She sounds like a good sister.”

“You could say that we are close,” Roger said. “I visit her from time to time, but she doesn’t drive since her accident, so she doesn’t make it down to our neck of the woods very often. In fact, I don’t think she really comes up to the cabin much anymore. It’s hard for her to get around.”

Kate saw the sign for the Big Bear exit and felt an overwhelming sense of doom cover her like a blanket. They were getting close. Her anxiety level began to spike again, and her breathing became ragged. It was like she was on a rollercoaster approaching the top, just about to plunge to the bottom.

“What kind of accident did she have?” she asked with a breathy voice. She needed to take some deep breaths before she hyperventilated.

“She had a car accident. It is difficult for her to turn her head and walking is painful because of her spinal injuries,” Roger said. “Her doctors worked really hard to get her to where she is. She’s had fifteen surgeries over the past few years. It was quite an ordeal so she stays home for the most part. I think she even gets her groceries delivered.”

Kate didn’t ask any more questions. She didn’t want to know any more. She just wanted to be with Neil. As they began to make their way up the mountain, her heart rate continued to beat like galloping horses. She watched the trees out the window, knowing that as they passed each one, she was getting farther and farther away from freedom and closer to having to fulfill Roger’s desires, like the one she had previewed in the bathroom. Despair weighed heavily on her brow as she gazed out the window. She hoped that the cabin wasn’t too remote so she would have a chance to escape at some point. The winter weather would make escaping hazardous. She wasn’t dressed for the chilly temperatures of the mountains.

The Devil´s Masquerade: The Poison ( The Devil´s Eyes # 4 ) – Jennifer Loren

the poison

OMG! I was totally enchanted by The Devil´s Masquerade: The Poison by the A.W.E.S.O.M.E. author Jennifer Loren. If the other 3 previous books were gut-twisting…..then this one was anxiously infuriating. I enjoyed every second of the angsty feeling I had from the first page to the last.

I didn´t know there was anything that could tear Nick and his Kayla apart….until….Dennis Savage decided to make it his mission to destroy the couple and make Nick Jayzon ( oh, by the by….who is also the devil´s grandson…) his.

The feelings I got while reading this book were outrageous. I felt my heart beating fast after every chapter and I wanted nothing more than for Nick to go all super scary bad/good guy on his grandpa´s ass. This story made me nuts ( in the best way ever! ).

Can the enemy take over and destroy a bond that is unbreakable?. In this book….It sure can! When Savage wants something….he will go to extremes to get it. And in this case…he was on his way to take control over Nick to complete the destiny that was planned for the Savage family. Nick was to take his place as the demon he was supposed to be. With his ability to eliminate anything that got in his way, Nick was born to be at the devils side. But was that what Nick wanted for himself?

Nick was aware of Savage and his plans, but wanted nothing to do with them. His love and devotion for his wife, Kayla, and his two sons was the only thing that kept Nick in the right place, and with only that….Nick was the richest man on earth. When Nick found out about Savages´ major plan to take over the unisverse, Nick was determinded to fight the evil that was seaking him out. But unfortunately without success. Savage gets his sticky little claws on Nick and leaves Kayla, the kids, and many others confused behind. How could the man who protected his biggest priority just drop everything and leave? How could he stop loving his equal within a few moments?

Haha….Thats for you guys to find out! I was so ready to attack at that moment. The frustration I felt was unbearable and I wanted to beat the crap out of the situation. No….scratch that…..I wanted to beat the whole book up!

I´m telling y´all…..the heartbreak and the agony I felt for some characters was so heavy, it felt like my own. Eli, Kayla, Ryan, Nick, and even some family members from the ” dark-side” were such a joy to read about and to see what they had to struggle with.

Can Kayla´s love save Nick from becoming the ultimate evil? Will both be able to win against the greatest evil facing this earth? I sure as hell hope so! If not….I might have a nervous breakdown!

With this book being the 4th in the series….I kind of thought there wasn´t much more an author could come up with to keep the complete story interesting enough. I´ve read enough books to see major differences between this series and others..for example: there was NO constantly repeating the dialogues, trying to fill in plot-holes, and desperately trying to capture a readers attention by focusing on just one topic ( may that be from sex to emotions or any other subject you can imagine)…Jennifer Loren balanced everything perfectly. There was enough of everything, and for a reader to want more. A very very tricky thing to manage, but in my opinion….turning a romance into a paranormal romance (with still a very realistic edge to it) AND keeping the speed of the story at an increasing pace, the author nailed it.

Now, what about the outcome from all of the twists and turns of events in this story? The author really made a point of making you WANT to read the next book. You will want to read the next book ASAP! The ending was spectacular. I loved how there was a reason given to fight….fight for Nick, for the good, and for justice. Oh, and by the way…..there was one character in this book that I loved just as much as I do Elijah and Nick…and that was Kamini. She was something odd but yet totally cool and gave the story another unique touch to it. A must have in the Devil´s Eyes world.

Since I obviously cannot get enough of the book / series / author…..it´s not a surprise at all that this book will receive a fantastic rating..:-)
Read, Read, and READ this book…..damn….read the series!!!! You´ll love it!
